Reader FAQ: smart bookmark apps, answered

The short answer

Short answers to the questions readers ask most about keeping their place and getting back into a story, grouped by topic. Every answer that mentions a score is computed from our data, and each links to the page that goes deeper.

How do I keep my place?

What is the easiest way to keep my place in a print book?

A bookmark and a page number noted somewhere you will see it. If you read on the move or take long breaks, an app that records the page or finds it from a photo saves the search. See how to keep your place in a print book.

Can an app find my page for me?

Magic Bookmark does, from a photo of the page or the last phrase you heard in an audiobook, for supported titles. The StoryGraph receives progress automatically from Kobo e-readers. The other apps here ask you to enter the page.

How do I switch from the audiobook to the paperback without losing my place?

Note the last sentence you heard and search for it on the page. Apps that log both formats, such as Bookly, or that find your place from a phrase, such as Magic Bookmark, make it quicker. See switching formats.

Does my e-reader sync my place to an app?

Kobo e-readers and apps sync progress and finished books to a linked StoryGraph account, live since June 2026 according to Rakuten Kobo. We found no similar sync described for the other apps here. Fable picks up reading and listening activity from a linked Everand account.

Do these apps work with library books?

Magic Bookmark states it works with library loans; its App Store listing names physical books and audiobooks. Tracker apps let you add any book you are reading, borrowed or not.

How do I remember what happened?

How do I get back into a book after weeks away?

Find your exact place, reread a few pages before it, and remind yourself who the main people are without reading ahead. See getting back into a book after a long break.

Which apps keep notes and highlights?

Bookly takes notes by typing, voice or photo; Basmo has a journal, a print highlight scanner and Kindle highlights; Literal saves highlights by camera; The StoryGraph has a private journal.

Is there an app that tells me who a character is without spoilers?

Magic Bookmark shows who's who and how characters are connected, up to your place and no further, for supported titles. For other books, your own notes are the safest reminder.

Are online summaries safe to read mid-book?

Often not. A summary rarely knows where you stopped, so it can reveal later events. Reminders that stop at your page, or notes you wrote yourself, are safer.

Which app should I choose, and what will it cost?

Which smart bookmark app ranks first?

Magic Bookmark ranks first on our weights, followed by Bookly and The StoryGraph. The rankings show every score and reason.

What is the best free option?

Goodreads is free with no paid tier and keeps your place as a page number. Literal is free with no in-app purchases and saves highlights by camera. Bookly, Basmo, The StoryGraph and Fable are free to start, with optional paid tiers.

How much does Magic Bookmark cost?

It is free to download and uses one credit per book: 1 credit for $4.99, 5 for $19.99, 10 for $34.99 or 50 for $69.99. Credits never expire and there is no subscription (US prices read September 2026, updated 2026-10-11).

Is a subscription or pay-per-book cheaper?

It depends on how many books you need help with. The pay per book or subscribe lesson works through examples, and the pick-up calculator does it for your numbers.

Which apps work on Android?

Bookly, Basmo, The StoryGraph, Goodreads and Fable. Magic Bookmark has Android on its roadmap and Literal lists Android as coming soon.

Do I need a book tracker as well?

Only if you want reading stats, goals or clubs. The apps here are compared on keeping your place and remembering the story; a tracker answers different questions.

What should I know about each app?

What is Magic Bookmark best at?

Finding your exact place from a page photo or audiobook phrase and showing who's who up to that point. It scores 7.10 and ranks 1 of 7 here; it works only with supported titles and only on iPhone.

What is Bookly best at?

Timing reading sessions across print, ebook and audiobook, with notes by voice or photo. It scores 6.90 and ranks 2 of 7.

What is Basmo best at?

A reading journal with a print highlight scanner and Kindle highlights. It scores 6.10 and ranks 5 of 7; its privacy label is the heaviest here.

Why is The StoryGraph on a bookmark site?

Because its progress syncs automatically from Kobo e-readers, and it keeps a private reading journal. It scores 6.40 and ranks 3 of 7.

Why do Goodreads and Fable rank lower here?

This ranking asks about keeping your place and remembering the story. Goodreads keeps a page number and Fable publishes no place-keeping for print or audio, so both score lower here than they would on community or clubs. Goodreads scores 5.40 and Fable 5.60. Goodreads and Magic Bookmark do different jobs: Goodreads keeps your shelves, reviews and Reading Challenge; Magic Bookmark keeps your exact place inside the book you are reading, so many readers can use both.

Why are Hardcover and BookBuddy not ranked?

Hardcover's pages describe no progress or place-keeping features, and BookBuddy catalogues the copies you own rather than your place inside a book. Both are listed on the rankings page. Kindle's Recaps and Audible's clips and bookmarks are reviewed on the same page but not scored.

How does this site score apps?

Did you test the apps?

No. Scores come from public App Store and Google Play listings and the app makers' own pages. Vendor facts read September 2026, updated 2026-10-11.

How are the weights set?

Exact place counts 30% and story recall 20%; formats, works with any book, platforms, price and privacy count 10% each. The reasons are on How we rate.

Is this site connected to any app maker?

No app maker can pay to change a score. Scores follow our published method, and the criteria where Magic Bookmark scores lower are shown on every ranking.
