Lesson 8 of 10 · SAVE YOUR PLACE · 2 min read
Switching between print, ebook and audiobook in the same book
Each format keeps your place in its own unit: pages for print, percentages or locations for ebooks, and timestamps for audio. To switch smoothly, keep one record of your place in words or pages. Bookly logs all three formats with one timer, and Magic Bookmark finds your place from a page photo or an audiobook phrase in supported titles.

Why switching loses your place
The paperback says page 212. The ebook says 43%. The audiobook says 6 hours 10 minutes. All three can be the same moment in the story, and none of them converts neatly into the others. Every switch is a small search.
A simple rule: keep one record in the text
Pick one record that works everywhere, and the text itself is the only thing all three formats share. A sentence, a page number in the print edition, or a chapter plus the opening words of the scene. When you switch, search for that sentence rather than converting units.
How the apps handle three formats
- Bookly tracks books, ebooks and audiobooks with the same timer, so your sessions sit in one log whatever the format.
- Magic Bookmark works with hardcover, paperback, audiobooks and library loans. It finds your place from a photo of the page or the last phrase you heard, for supported titles. Its website also lists ebooks, but the App Store listing names only physical books and audiobooks.
- The StoryGraph takes progress by page or percentage, and syncs it automatically from Kobo e-readers, and sets listening goals for audiobooks.
- Literal has public-domain ebooks and audiobooks in the app and camera highlights from printed pages.
- Basmo lists print books, ebooks and audiobooks, and Fable pairs its own ebook reader with listening activity from a linked Everand account. Goodreads lets you shelve the ebook or audiobook edition and update your page.
Which setup suits a format switcher?
- Mostly print plus audio: an app that understands both, so you can go from the car to the sofa without searching.
- Mostly ebook on a Kobo, with print at home: StoryGraph's sync covers the ebook side; keep a page note for the print side.
- All three, every week: a single log of sessions, plus a sentence note when you stop.
The shelf compare table lists what each app publishes for print, ebook and audiobook side by side.
