E-reader progress sync: how your ebook place reaches a tracking app
An e-reader always knows your place, but that place usually stays on the device. Since June 2026, Rakuten Kobo says progress and finished books from Kobo e-readers and apps flow into a linked StoryGraph account automatically, at no extra cost. It helps Kobo readers; it does nothing for the print copy on your shelf.

What changed in 2026?
On 19 May 2026, Rakuten Kobo and The StoryGraph announced that Kobo reading progress would sync to StoryGraph from June, with finished books marked as read automatically. On 29 June 2026, Kobo said the integration was live for all users of Kobo e-readers and apps, at no extra cost.
What does the sync carry?
According to Kobo, two things: your reading progress, and the fact that you finished a book. That is what a tracker needs to keep your place current without you typing a page or percentage. Kobo's announcements do not describe notes or highlights moving across, so we do not assume they do.
Who does it help?
Readers who do most of their reading on a Kobo device or in the Kobo app, and who use The StoryGraph as their tracker. For them, the place-keeping job is mostly done by the device. It is the main reason StoryGraph scores 5 out of 10 on exact place here.
Who does it not help?
- Readers on other e-readers. We found no equivalent e-reader sync described for the other apps here; Fable's Everand link is an app-to-app sync.
- Anyone who switches to a print copy or an audiobook part way through. The sync knows where you are in the Kobo ebook, not on page 212 of the paperback.
- Readers who need help with the story, not the page. A percentage tells you where you are, not who everyone is.
What about other ebook features?
Fable has its own ebook reader with highlights and notes, imports from Kindle, and picks up reading and listening activity from a linked Everand account. Basmo imports Kindle highlights. Kindle's own Recaps and Story So Far, which we list but do not score, recap the story up to where you stopped, for best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks in the U.S.
