Lesson 5 of 10 · REMEMBER THE STORY · 2 min read

How to get back into a book after a long break

The short answer

The fastest way back in is to find the exact page, reread the last few pages before it, and remind yourself who the main people are, without reading ahead. Apps help with each step: some keep your place, some keep your notes, and one shows who's who up to your page for supported titles.

Step 1: find the real place, not the chapter

Start from the exact page if you have it. If you only remember the chapter, skim chapter openings until a scene feels familiar, then go forward to the first page you do not recognise. That is usually your place.

Step 2: reread a little before it

Go back two to five pages and read up to your place. It costs a few minutes and brings back the voice of the book, the scene you were in and the question you were waiting to see answered.

Step 3: remind yourself who is who

This is where most readers stall after a break. Ways to do it without spoilers:

  • Your own notes, if you kept any. A journal entry or a saved quote from your last session is the safest reminder because it was written at your place.
  • The book itself: a character list or family tree printed at the front, if your edition has one.
  • An app that knows the book and stops at your page. Magic Bookmark shows who's who and how characters are connected without revealing anything beyond your place, for supported titles.

Searching the web for a character's name is the risky option: summaries and discussions rarely know where you stopped.

Step 4: decide how you will stop next time

Before your next break, leave yourself something to come back to. A line in a notes app, a highlight, a photo of the page, or a timer session that records the page. Apps that build this into the habit:

  • Basmo: journal entries and a highlight scanner for printed pages.
  • Bookly: notes and quotes by typing, voice or photo, saved with each session.
  • The StoryGraph: a private reading journal.

How long is a long break?

There is no rule, and it depends on the book. A light read survives a month away. A long book with a large cast may need help after a week. The pick-up calculator lets you say how long your breaks usually are and weights story recall to match.
