Who is who: character reminders that stop at your page
The safest character reminder is one that only knows what you have read. Your notes and the book's own front matter do that by design. Among the apps here, Magic Bookmark shows who's who and how they're connected up to your place, for supported titles; the others leave this to your notes.

Why characters are the hard part
Plot comes back quickly once you reread a few pages. Names do not. A book with a large cast, several families or two timelines can leave you unsure who a returning character is, and that uncertainty is what makes people put a book down for good.
Where can you look without reading ahead?
- Your notes. Written at your place, so they cannot spoil anything.
- The book. Some editions print a list of characters or a family tree. It is written by the author or publisher, but it can still mention people you have not met yet.
- An app that stops at your page. Magic Bookmark shows the cast, who's who and how they're connected, without revealing anything beyond your place in the story. It needs to know your place first, from a page photo or an audiobook phrase, and it only covers supported titles.
What about reading communities?
Community features help with discussion rather than reminders. The StoryGraph offers buddy reads with live reactions to specific parts of a book without fear of spoilers, and Fable advertises spoiler-free discussion spaces. These are good for talking about a book as you go. They are not built to answer "who is this again" for one reader at one page. Kindle's Recaps and Story So Far, which we list but do not score, give spoiler-free recaps up to where you stopped reading, for best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks in the U.S.
What to check before you rely on an app
- Is your book covered? An app that knows the book can only help with books it knows.
- How does it know where you are? If the place is wrong, so is the reminder.
- Does it stop at your place? Magic Bookmark states that nothing beyond your place is revealed.
How we score it
Character reminders count under story recall (20%). An app that shows who is who at your place scores high there, but if it only covers some titles it scores lower on works with any book (10%). Both sides are on the rankings page.
