Lesson 1 of 10 · SAVE YOUR PLACE · 2 min read

What a smart bookmark app does

The short answer

A smart bookmark app does two jobs a paper bookmark cannot: it saves your place in a form you can find from your phone, and it helps you remember the story when you come back. Apps save a place in four ways: a page you type, a timed session, a sync from an e-reader, or a page the app finds for you.

Why is a paper bookmark not enough?

A paper bookmark is very good at one thing: it keeps the page. It cannot tell you where you were in the audiobook you listened to on the train, it does not travel with you when you switch to the ebook on your phone, and it says nothing about what happened in the chapters before it. After a long break, the page is often the easy part. Remembering who everyone is and why it matters is harder.

What are the four ways an app saves your place?

  1. You type the page. Most reading trackers, including Goodreads, let you update the page you have reached. It is quick if you remember to do it.
  2. You time a session. Bookly and Basmo run a timer while you read and log the session, so your last page is recorded with the time you spent.
  3. A device sends it. Since June 2026, Rakuten Kobo says reading progress from Kobo e-readers and apps flows into a linked StoryGraph account automatically.
  4. The app finds it. Magic Bookmark asks for a photo of the page you are on, or the last phrase you heard in an audiobook, and syncs to that exact place in a supported title.

What about remembering the story?

Apps take two approaches. Some keep what you capture: notes, quotes, highlights and journal entries. Others tell you about the book itself, such as a list of who is who. The first works for any book but depends on your own habits. The second needs the app to know the book, which is why it only works for titles the app supports.

What can none of them do?

None of these apps reads the book for you, and none can guess your place if you give it nothing to go on. A typed page is only as good as your memory to update it. A photo only works if the title is supported. A sync only works on the device that sends it.

How do we compare them?

Our rankings weight exact place at 30% and story recall at 20%, because those two are the job. The other five criteria cover formats, which books work, platforms, price and privacy. The method page explains each one.

Next lessonPrint booksFor a print book, the simplest method is still a bookmark plus a page number written somewhere you will find it. Apps add a timed log of each session, or, for supported titles, a photo of the page that finds your exact place. The best choice depends on how long your breaks are and whether you also listen or read on a screen.
