Reading app updates, March to September 2026: what matters for keeping your place

The short answer

This post covers dated updates from March to September 2026, read from App Store and Google Play version histories and the companies' own announcements on 27 September 2026. Two of them change how you keep your place: the Kobo and StoryGraph sync, and Magic Bookmark's arrival on the App Store.

Which ones change how you keep your place?

Two. The Kobo and StoryGraph sync means Kobo readers no longer type their progress. Magic Bookmark is a new kind of app in this set: it finds your exact place from a page photo or an audiobook phrase, for supported titles, and shows who's who up to that point.

Which ones help in other ways?

Literal's rebuild added free public-domain books inside the app, which is why it lists ebooks and audiobooks among its formats. Goodreads' Did Not Finish shelf helps keep a log honest but does not change place-keeping. The others are interface changes.

Hardcover and BookBuddy

Both appear here because we follow them, but neither is ranked on this site: Hardcover's pages describe no place-keeping features, and BookBuddy catalogues copies rather than your place in them. See which apps we left out.
