Keeping your place in a library book you have to give back

The short answer

A library loan can end before the book does, and a paper bookmark goes back with it. Keep your place and notes somewhere you own: an app, a notes file or a photo. Magic Bookmark states it works with library loans, and every app here lets you record a book you borrowed.

The problem with borrowed books

A borrowed book comes with a deadline and no memory. If the loan runs out mid-book, you may wait weeks for it to come back. When it does, the copy may be a different edition with different page numbers, or the ebook instead of the paperback.

What to keep when the book goes back

  1. Your place in words, not just a page. Write down the chapter and the first words of the scene. Page numbers change between editions; sentences do not.
  2. One line on where the story is. Who is in the scene, what just happened.
  3. Names you might forget. Two or three are enough.

Where apps help

  • Magic Bookmark says it works with library loans and finds your place from a page photo or the last phrase you heard in an audiobook, for supported titles. Because it finds the place in the text rather than a page number, a different edition is less of a problem.
  • Bookly keeps notes and quotes by typing, voice or photo with each session, so your reminders stay after the book goes back.
  • Basmo keeps a reading journal and highlights you scan from printed pages.
  • Any tracker, including Goodreads and The StoryGraph, will hold the page you reached; just note which edition it was.

A small routine for loans

When you get a library notice that a loan is ending, take two minutes: photograph the page you are on, note the scene in one line, and add any names. When the book comes back, start a few pages before your place. It is the same routine as getting back into a book after a long break, with a deadline.
