Will it run on your phone? Platforms for seven bookmark apps

The short answer

Five of the seven apps run on both iPhone and Android, and four have a web version. Magic Bookmark runs on iPhone only with Android on its roadmap, and Literal lists Android as coming soon.

Who runs where

  • The StoryGraph: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
  • Goodreads: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
  • Fable: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
  • Bookly: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision, Apple Watch and Android.
  • Basmo: iPhone (no iPad version on the App Store) and Android.
  • Literal: iPhone, iPad and web; Android listed as coming soon.
  • Magic Bookmark: iPhone only, with iOS 16.4 or later; the App Store says it is not verified for macOS. Android is on the roadmap.

Why platforms matter for a bookmark

A bookmark app has to be on the device you have with you when you stop reading. If your phone is Android and the app is not, the app cannot help however good it is. A web version matters less for keeping your place, but helps if you like to read notes on a laptop.

What if your phone is not covered?

  • Use an app that runs on your phone for the place, and keep notes in a notes app you already have.
  • Check the app maker's page for platform plans; Literal and Magic Bookmark both state Android is planned, without a date on the pages we read.
  • If you share a household iPad, an app that runs there can still be your bookmark at home.

How we score platforms

Phones and platforms carries 10% of the total. Apps on iPhone, iPad, Android and web score highest; Magic Bookmark scores 2 because it runs on iPhone only. In the pick-up calculator, choosing Android removes the apps that do not run there.

Back to lesson 1What a smart bookmark doesA smart bookmark app does two jobs a paper bookmark cannot: it saves your place in a form you can find from your phone, and it helps you remember the story when you come back. Apps save a place in four ways: a page you type, a timed session, a sync from an e-reader, or a page the app finds for you.
