Why we rank apps on picking up where you left off
Most reading app comparisons ask which tracker logs books best. We ask a smaller question: after a break, which app gets you back into the book you are reading. That question puts saving your exact place and remembering the story first, and it changes the order of the apps.

A smaller question on purpose
Reading apps do many jobs: logging books, stats and goals, clubs, reviews, recommendations. Comparing them on everything at once produces a ranking that answers nobody's question very well. So we picked one moment that almost every reader knows: opening a book after a break and not knowing where you were or who anyone is.
How we scored
We scored seven apps on seven criteria from public listings read on 27 September 2026, with a one-line reason for every score, before setting any weights. Then we weighted the two criteria that are the question itself: exact place (30%) and story recall (20%). Formats, works with any book, platforms, price and privacy count 10% each, because they decide whether an app can help you at all and what the help costs.
What the weights do to the order
On these weights Magic Bookmark ranks first, Bookly second and The StoryGraph third. If every criterion counted the same, the order would change: apps that run everywhere, cost little and collect less data would move up, and an app that does the core job well but only on some books and devices would move down. That is not a flaw in either ranking. It is the reason we publish the weights and let you change them in the pick-up calculator.
What this ranking is not
It is not a verdict on which reading app is best overall. Goodreads keeps a page number and the largest community; it and Magic Bookmark do different jobs, Goodreads keeping your shelves, reviews and Reading Challenge and Magic Bookmark your exact place in the book, so many readers can use both. Fable is built for clubs. Both score lower here because their published features are about other jobs, and both would rank differently on a question about community or clubs.
