Six smart bookmark myths, checked against the listings

The short answer

Most assumptions about bookmark apps are half right. Several apps cost nothing, few describe audiobook features, and only one finds your page for you, for supported titles. Each check below uses listings read on 27 September 2026.

Myth 1: you need a subscription

Not true for most. Goodreads has no paid tier, Literal has no in-app purchases on the App Store, and four others are free to start. Magic Bookmark has no subscription either; it charges one credit per book.

Myth 2: any app can find your page

Only one of the seven describes finding your place for you: Magic Bookmark, from a page photo or an audiobook phrase, and only for supported titles. The StoryGraph receives your place automatically from Kobo e-readers. The rest record the page you enter, apart from Fable's sync with a linked Everand account.

Myth 3: every reading app handles audiobooks

Many let you add an audiobook as a book, but few describe audiobook features. On the pages we read, Bookly logs audiobook sessions, Magic Bookmark syncs from the last phrase you heard, Literal includes public-domain audiobooks, The StoryGraph sets listening goals, Basmo lists audiobooks and Fable syncs listening activity from Everand. Only Goodreads describes nothing beyond shelving the audiobook edition.

Myth 4: notes are only for students

Notes are the most reliable way back into a story, because you wrote them at your place. A three-line note at the end of a session does more than most features. See notes, highlights and journals.

Myth 5: a free app costs you nothing

It costs you data, in amounts the privacy labels describe. Basmo's App Store label lists identifiers used to track you and data used for third-party advertising. Goodreads lists data linked to you, used among other things for marketing. Magic Bookmark's label lists identifiers used to track you. Literal states no ads and no selling of data.

Myth 6: the app at the top is best for everyone

Our ranking answers one question with published weights. On it Magic Bookmark ranks first. If you read on Android, only on a Kobo, or want everything free, a different app will suit you better, and the pick-up calculator will show which.
